The first custom ROM for Nexus One is released by Paul at Modaco forums. The custom ROM includes Tethering hack, busybox, nano 2.09, parted and sqlite tools, titanium backup and more. If you want to install the Custom ROM then backup your Nexus One using Nandroid for safety purposes, as its a hacked ROM. Install the Custom ROM on your on risk.
Features included in the custom ROM:
- Rooted with ‘adb remount’ permission and superuser APK.
- MoDaCo Custom Kernel 1.0 – enabled netfilter, nfs, cifs, tun module, EXT4 and more.
- Added busybox 1.15.3 – tweaked such that ‘get information’ in Swapper now works as desired.
- Added nano 2.09 – text editor for use in shell mode.
- Added parted and sqlite tools.
- Added much more complete APN list
- Added Wireless Tether
- Added Titanium Backup
- Removed Amazon MP3 (can be re-added manually via APK).
- You can now check your MoDaCo Custom ROM (MCR) version from the about menu.

Follow the steps below to install the Custom ROM:
- First up, you will have to unlock the bootloader, and then root your Nexus One for full file system access on Android 2.1.
- Download the patched recovery image from here install it.
- Download the custom ROM from here and copy it to over to SD-Card on the phone.
- Enter the recovery image (if you not in it already) by powering on while pressing ‘Home’.
- Select ‘Nandroid backup’ from the menu to do a backup.
- If you copied the custom ROM as update.zip, select ‘apply sdcard:update.zip’, else select the option below.
- Enjoy using first custom ROM for Nexus One.
